Mihad Murtada, Rabha Mohamed Mahmoud, Talaat Fareed
In a cotton-farming village in Sudan, teenage Nafisa (Mihad Murtada) is torn between tradition and survival. When a businessman arrives with two proposals – to modernise the local cotton industry with a genetically modified crop, and to marry her – Nafisa becomes the focal point of a struggle for her village’s future. Guided by her battle-scarred grandmother (Rabha Mohamed Mahmoud), whose memories of resistance against British colonialism still shape the village, Nafisa begins to awaken to her own power.
Expanded from her award-winning 2020 short Al-Sit, Suzannah Mirghani’s captivating debut feature is a sweeping reflection on Sudanese womanhood, heritage and transformation. Filmed in Egypt after the outbreak of the ongoing war in Sudan and performed by Sudanese refugees, the film’s own production mirrors its themes of displacement, resilience and creative endurance.
