The story of one of the first Black army units fighting for freedom and dignity in the American Civil War.

Gravedigger John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman) and formerly enslaved escapee Silas Trip (Denzel Washington) are recruited to one of the first all-Black Union Army regiments by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick).

What follows is a stirring depiction of the struggles of the Civil War told through the eyes of Black recruits, from harsh conditions on the unit itself to the racist threats of the Confederacy, as they face down one of the most brutal onslaughts of the War in Charlestown.

The rare period drama that does justice to African American lives and their role in the broader American story, Glory is a moving and inspirational film, with an Oscar-winning turn by Washington, that shows how the heroism of Black soldiers turned the tide of the Civil War.
