Babeldom

Dir: Paul Bush|UK|2012|80 mins|15

"This is a film – and a city – to get lost in."  Isabel Stevens, Sight & Sound

Babeldom is a city so massive and growing at such a speed that soon, it is said, light itself will not escape its gravitational pull. How can two lovers communicate, one from inside the city and one outside?

In his debut feature film, award winning British experimental animator and filmmaker Paul Bush presents an elegy to urban life. Against the backdrop of a city of the future, a portrait is assembled from film shot in modern cities all around the world and collected from the most recent research in science, technology and architecture.

"As a 'science fiction documentary’, this portrait of a futuristic city is narrated by one of its inhabitants. The twist is that all the images in this found-footage film come from architecture, science and technology of the present day. The future is already here. In many ways this is a follow up to Bush’s 1996 short film ‘The Rumour of True Things,’ now with a minimalist narrative thread running through the accumulation of high-tech imagery. Two lovers try to communicate, one from within, the other outside the city. Eurydice regained?" - Edwin Carels, Programmer at International film Festival Rotterdam

A programme of Paul Bush’s award-winning short films, is also available to screen as an accompaniment to his new feature Babeldom, including many festival favourites and showing his development as an artist and filmmaker.
