FEDS Alumni International Support

01/08/2022 - 31/03/2023

British Council Film is supporting the ICO to create opportunities for selected FEDS alumni to secure short-term placements with an international exhibition partner (for example a festival, independent exhibitor or cinema chain).  A flexible pot of £6,000 is available, which will be used to support two to three FEDS placement projects.

The fund is intended to be highly responsive to the ambition and specific needs of proposals.  Additional project funding is welcome but not essential – applicants should be aware that value for money will be considered in the decision making process.

Dates

01/08/2022 - 31/03/2023

Objectives

The scheme aims to:

  • develop skills and understanding of exhibition practice, programming and event & cinema management
  • create access to unique and diverse film programming
  • encourage networking and the development of new contacts
  • enhance career options and build on past FEDS experience
  • develop links between British Council, ICO and international partners
  • increase UK presence/profile at international events

The Offer

The ICO will provide financial support to allow selected alumni of the FEDS scheme to secure a short term placement within an international festival, exhibitor or film event to develop knowledge, skills and contacts, build exhibition experience and contribute to their professional development. Eligible costs the grant will cover include travel, accommodation, festival accreditation and reasonable expenses. Further items identified by applicants will also be considered.

Applicants will be responsible for securing the placement opportunity, liaising with the partner and organising travel and accommodation. The ICO and British Council may be able to assist in liaison with international partners if required.

The proposed placement must:

  • be based outside the UK
  • take place between July 2022 and March 2023
  • offer opportunities not available in the UK

Specific benefits to participants could include accessing a particular strand of specialised programming, connecting with key industry figures or developing links with a specific national cinema.

Following completion of the placement the participant will be required to provide a report of the project plus content suitable for the ICO blog and social media.

Application Process

Applicants should submit a placement proposal to the ICO detailing:

  • The international partner identified
  • Dates and duration of attendance
  • The nature and responsibilities of the role
  • A description of the organisation and how a placement would benefit the applicant’s knowledge, skills, contacts and career
  • Any existing contacts, experience or skills which would support the creation and delivery of the placement project
  • Outline costs of placement including travel, accommodation, accreditation and subsistence
  • Any additional funding contributing to the placement
  • The amount requested from ICO

The ICO reserves the right to offer successful applicants less than the requested amount.

Please send proposals to James Calver at the ICO by Monday 18 July: james.calver@independentcinemaoffice.org.uk

Criteria & decision process

Applications will be assessed by ICO and British Council against the following criteria:

  • Contribution to scheme objectives
  • Value for money
  • Impact on applicant career

Timescale:

Applications should be submitted to the ICO by Monday 18 July 2022. Successful applicants will be notified within two weeks of the deadline. If funds remain after awards have been allocated a further call will be announced.

Payment process:

A budget and timescale of payments will be agreed with individual awardees to ensure funds are available to deliver the placement. Up to 90% of the award will be made in advance of the programme, with 10% held until delivery of reporting and any other agreed deliverables. Awardees will need to submit receipts for all expenditure. Any funds allocated not covered by receipts will need to be reimbursed.

Disclaimer:

The ICO and British Council will not be liable for any personal injury or additional costs incurred through participation in the scheme and awardees should ensure they are covered by appropriate insurance.
