BFI Film Academy Labs: Film Poster Design with Sam Ashby

28/10/2021 - 28/10/2021

4:30pm - 5:30pm

BFI Film Academy Labs are online events for 16 – 25 year olds to gain industry insight and get professional advice and support to develop their own film programming and film making practices. Programmed by the Young Film Programmers’ Network (South East) they are delivered as practical masterclasses, workshops and networking sessions.

About the session

This month we’re delighted to be joined by Sam Ashby, a British filmmaker and graphic designer. He has been creating award-winning artwork for independent films for the UK and international markets for over 15 years. He is currently a creative director at Intermission Film, heading up the advertising agency’s film poster department. Since 2010 he has collaborated with writers, academics, and artists on his publication Little Joe, ‘a magazine about queers and cinema, mostly.’ His first film, The Colour of His Hair (2017) premiered at International Film Festival Rotterdam 2017 and won the Best Documentary prize at London Short Film Festival 2018. He is a recipient of the Van Abbemuseum’s Deviant Practice research grant 2018-2019, and a MacDowell Colony fellow (2016, 2019).

His previous commissions include: God’s Own Country (dir: Francis Lee), I am Love (Dir: Luca Guadagnino), Weekend (dir: Andrew Haigh), We Need to Talk about Kevin (dir: Lynne Ramsey), Bloodlight and Bami (Sophie Fiennes), Frances Ha (Noah Baumbach) and Alice in the Cities revival poster (Wim Wenders). He was nominated for the Best Film Poster Design at the Screen Awards and won two years in a row, for Weekend with Peccadillo Pictures and Frances Ha for Metronome.

In this session, hosted by Amy Cresswell (Open House Film Club and Odyssey Cinema), Sam will talk about his journey into film poster designing, and his advice for aspiring young graphic designers and magazine editors.

This session will be live-captioned, we will provide instructions on how to access the captions at the beginning of the event.

If you have any questions about the event please get in touch at info@independentcinemaoffice.org.uk.
