The BFI Film Academy is looking for a team of enthusiastic and committed volunteers to help them deliver the Future Film Festival.
About the opportunity
The Future Film Festival is our annual festival for aspiring filmmakers aged 16 to 25 who want to learn from people already in the screen industry and is the UK’s largest film festival for young filmmakers. Over the course of four days – from 16 to 19 February 2023 – the festival presents panels and masterclasses with high-profile industry talent, networking opportunities, and screenings of the best short films from young, emerging filmmakers. The festival attracts 1000+ young people every year.
We are therefore looking for individuals who have a strong interest in the screen industries and are looking to gain experience in an events, customer service, filming and editing content.
We have two types of volunteers: Event Volunteers and Digital Volunteers. You can indicate which team you would like to be on in your application.
As an Event Volunteer you’ll have the opportunity to learn how a busy festival is run and how events and screenings are delivered. As a Digital Volunteer you’ll gain experience in filming interviews and content across the festival and get the chance to edit packages for social media. In both roles you’ll also have plenty of opportunity to enjoy various events at the festival, learn practical skills that you can take with you into future roles, and meet other people with an interest in the industry.
Main aims
To assist the BFI Future Film Festival team in delivering events, screenings, and digital output as well as giving information to festival attendees and industry members involved in the festival.
Key responsibilities
Event Volunteer responsibilities:
- To act as a source of information and guidance to festival attendees from the festival information desk and throughout the building.
- Direct customers to screening rooms, reception areas, ticketing points, and all BFI public areas.
- Look after guest speakers and VIPs as instructed by the Volunteers Manager/BFI Events team.
- Serve refreshments in our networking areas.
- Scan and check tickets to events and assist in event delivery when required.
- To undertake any other duties that may be required.
- To be an ambassador for the BFI through maintain a professional and friendly approach at all times.

Digital Volunteer responsibilities:
- Assisting in the filming of interviews with audience members and speakers.
- Operate filming equipment to capture content from around the Festival including events and screenings.
- Use sound recording equipment to record interviews for social media.
- Edit together highlight packages with guidance from BFI Digital producers.
- Work with other Digital Volunteers to create content for use by BFI Future Film Festival for social media and other purposes.
- To undertake any other duties that may be required.
- To be an ambassador for the BFI, maintaining a professional and friendly approach at all times.

Hours:
We ask that you are available to volunteer for all 4 days of the festival 16 – 19 February 2023 between the hours of 9:00am – 6:30pm. You will be provided with lunch and refreshments throughout the day and reimbursement of travel costs within zones 1-6.
