Freelance Flare Programmer

Salary: Up to £3,000 fee

BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival is looking to engage a new Film Programmer to join the programme team for the 2023 edition of the festival.

About the Role

You will work closely with the Flare curatorial team, with a specific focus on lesbian work, ensuring strong representation throughout the programme. Including:

• View films submitted to the festival and writing notes on all work viewed.
• Contribute and develop original programming and event ideas
• Contribute written work (film copy and editorial) to assist in the promotion of the Festival.
• Lead and/or participate in film introductions, Q&As and other live speaking events during the Festival.

Contract type: Fixed-term, freelance

We are looking for candidates who have:

• Demonstrable knowledge of a broad range of international cinema, with a passion for and experience in programming work by lesbian identified filmmakers and/or with lesbian content.
• Experience contributing to an LGBTQIA+ festival or cultural event.
• An interest in programming work from a diverse range of filmmakers, and under-represented voices in cinema.
• Ability to engage in discussion around films, to articulate a film’s qualities, flaws and potential audience, beyond the realm of personal taste.

The successful candidate will be paid a fee up to £3,000 for work completed towards BFI Flare programme. Payments will be agreed against set objectives throughout the course of the contract.

The majority of work will take place between November 2022 – March 2023, with a requirement to be available for the duration of the Festival itself (15 – 26 March 2023).
