The Irish Film Institute is looking for a Film Collections Officer to join the Archive collections team, working closely with the Head of Archive and the Film Collections and Acquisitions Manager (FCAM).
The successful candidate will implement the IFI Irish Film Archive’s collections management policies and ensure that film and tape collections are properly documented and preserved. The Film Collections Officer will have particular responsibility for the movement, assessment, repair and cataloguing of older film titles funded by Screen Ireland and for the creation of reference files and the QC of high-resolution files from film scans. They will be instructed in the use of specialised Archive equipment and software.

- Place of work will predominantly be the IFI Irish Film Archive in Temple Bar, with occasional work at the IFI Irish Film Archive at Maynooth University.

Role responsibilities
- Carrying out cataloguing, registration and other documentation procedures for IFI collections.
- Assessing film elements on film-viewing equipment, recording their condition within database records, making repairs where necessary, and recommending element selection for digitisation projects.
- Generating reference AV files on specialised Archive equipment.
- Applying QC checks and repairs to digitised material, using non-linear editing and restoration software.
- Efficiently carrying out all administrative functions, including creating timely and accurate internal reports, documentation of projects and practices, updating the IFI database as necessary, and sharing documentation with colleagues as appropriate.
- Providing reports, feedback and practical suggestions to your head of department/line manager as requested.
- Facilitating timely, accurate, safe and secure movement of items from archival storage to internal and external clients and users and ensuring location information is up to date. Implementing standards-based collections management and care policies and procedures within the IFI Irish Film Archive. Undertaking collections management checks in accordance with MSPI.
- Working with the Head of Archive and collections managers to review, monitor and recommend collections care and conservation strategies for the archive collection.
- Assisting the FCAM and Head of Archive with financial planning in relevant areas and taking delegated responsibility for designated budgets.
- Keeping up to date with technical developments in conservation, preservation and restoration in order to enhance standards of collection care.
- Any other task deemed relevant by the Director or Head of Department.
Person specifications
- A qualification in archiving or collections management or other relevant subject, or equivalent experience in collections management, cultural archives and/or libraries.
- Experience in collections management and/or cataloguing.
- Familiarity with the properties of film formats.
- Strong data management and organisational skills.
- Enthusiasm and flexibility, with outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy environment.
- Excellent IT, metadata creation and cataloguing experience; familiarity with the management of analogue collections and the use of databases.
- An interest in and knowledge of film and culture, and a good working knowledge of different film formats.
- Ability to work to deadlines.
- Experience with databases and familiarity with metadata standards.
- Excellent documentation skills.
- Experience using specialist film equipment such as Steenbecks and winders would be an advantage, as would familiarity with non-linear editing software.
