The Castle Cinema is an independent community cinema in Hackney, and the reincarnation of one of London’s earliest cinemas! Built in 1913 as The Castle Electric Theatre, the original cinema closed in 1958 but re-opened in 2017 after a successful crowdfunding campaign.

With two beautiful screens and a stunning bar, we’re passionate about great films, delicious refreshments and genuine service, and want a trip to The Castle to be remarkable for all three.

Summary

Duty Managers are responsible for the day to day management of The Castle Cinema, ensuring an outstanding customer experience.

They open and close the building, run the cinema’s daily operations, lead the Front of House (FOH) team, ensure excellent customer service, and are accountable for areas of delegated responsibilities – assisting Senior Managers and Directors in a wide range of daily, weekly and ad-hoc tasks.

Delegated responsibilities include:

  • F&B – assist with stock count, ordering, and deliveries. Adding new products to tills. Inputting invoices into spreadsheets and other software.
  • Marketing – assist with design (in-house posters, flyers, DCP slides), marketing (Mailchimp, social media), advertising (film posters) and putting shows on the website.
  • Projection – receive and ingest films, create and schedule playlists, make slides and DCPs, chase trailers and other content, maintain screen alignment, basic fault finding, and respond to issues if they arise.
  • Events and hires – running events and being the key staff member on site.

DMs work no less than 24 hours a week, though we expect it to be more like 32-38 hours in general. Shifts will include evening and weekend work with at least two shifts will be required every week between Fri – Mon.

  • Holiday entitlement: equivalent of 28 days per year (calculated pro rata)
  • Other benefits: complimentary tickets to screenings and events in the cinema, 50% discount on food and drink at the bar.
  • Contract: permanent, subject to a three month probationary period
Responsibilities
  1. Securely opening and closing the building, being a keyholder and contactable in the case of emergency.
  2. Leading FOH staff – providing direction, training and feedback to ensure everyone is equipped to meet customers’ expectations. Feeding back to Senior Management on the performance of all FOH staff, including monitoring attendance and lateness. Involvement in disciplinary procedures.
  3. Upholding the highest standard of customer service, including in person and via email / phone. Responding to queries and complaints in a timely and friendly manner.
  4. Ensuring that high standards of cleanliness are met in the bar, screening rooms, toilets and back of house at all times. Managing daily cleaning duties.
  5. Completing reports at the end of the trading day, and as required during shifts.
  6. Reporting relevant information to the Senior Managers about building maintenance and operational issues.
  7. Ensuring the safety of employees and guests by complying with all statutory Health & Safety requirements, including maintaining a current Emergency First Aid At Work certificate.
  8. Cash control – ensuring cash is handled and stored securely, and reported accurately
  9. Uphold systems and processes to prevent loss and to ensure the security of cash, assets, guests and employees at all times. Familiarity with operating CCTV.
  10. F&B – assist with stock count, ordering, and deliveries. Adding new products to tills. Inputting invoices into spreadsheets and other software.
  11. Marketing – assist with design (in-house posters, flyers, DCP slides), marketing (Mailchimp, social media), advertising (film posters) and putting shows on the website.
  12. Projection – receive and ingest films, create and schedule playlists, make slides and DCPs, chase trailers and other content, maintain screen alignment, respond to issues if they arise (inc basic fault finding)
  13. Events and hires – running events and being the key staff member on site.
  14. Contributing to the overall success and development of the Castle as a member of the Management team.
  15. To undertake any other duties as may be reasonably required by Senior Managers.

(Comprehensive training will be provided for all tasks and responsibilities)

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Previous experience in a management, supervisory or leadership role
  • Excellent customer service skills, with a calm and polite demeanour
  • Availability and willingness to work a variety of shift patterns as required by the business needs, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Experience and knowledge of Health and Safety practice
  • Previous bar / cafe work
  • Friendly and positive attitude, and able to work well in a team
  • Punctual, presentable and reliable
  • Keen attention to detail
  • A proactive approach to solving problems
  • Demonstrable excellent customer service skills
  • Strong and effective communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with customers, employees and senior managers
  • Confident with Windows, Mac and Google Docs
  • Experience working with stock

Desirable:

  • Experience in managing front of house activities within an arts venue
  • Personal licence for alcohol sales
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms
  • Experience with Photoshop and/or Mailchimp
  • Experience with copywriting
  • Projection and technical knowledge
  • Current Emergency First Aid at Work certificate
  • Food Hygiene certificate
