Salary: £750-£900 per month / £125 per day

BIFA is recruiting a part time / consultant Communications Manager to work on its year-round audience facing activity which focuses on championing British independent film to younger audiences throughout the UK, in cinemas and at home.

They will be responsible for building relationships with local partners (exhibitors, local film groups, universities, individuals) to share our marketing materials and initiatives, plus finding and supporting other initiatives / programmes / programming that are relevant to our target audience and are featuring BIFA relevant titles or talent, to ensure BIFA is able to amplify these where possible.

We are looking for someone with a strong communications background and experience in community outreach. A passion for independent film and developing audience is key for this role.

BIFA is at the heart of the UK independent film industry and this role will help to nurture younger audience engagement for outstanding British films and talent, ensuring a more prominent place in the wider cultural landscape.

The BIFA team are working remotely for the foreseeable future. The role will be remote, but with the possibility of some days in the BIFA office in central London, if preferred. There may be some travel involved to events/industry days etc.

  • Start date: ASAP (latest 7 June)
  • Hours / terms: part time based on 30% of FT c.1.5 days p/w on average (likely to be more labour intensive at the start then ease off)
  • Working pattern: This role is able to offer flexible working and could work well alongside another part-time/consultancy role or other commitments

Responsibilities

  • Manage communications from BIFA to exhibitors, festivals and other organisations, sharing campaign materials and activity that is relevant to them e.g. sharing marketing/asset packs, communicating updates, engaging them in any events or competitions we might have planned
  • Establish a flow of information from cinemas, festivals and other partners and stakeholders about their activity which is relevant to BIFA so we can support e.g. ticket offers, events, specific youth audience focused programmes etc
  • Run outreach to local youth organisations, film groups/clubs, film/media studies courses to engage with the ongoing campaign, e.g. sharing our marketing material to their communities, encouraging to join in ongoing discussion around the campaign
  • Share information and feedback from external partners to the BIFA marketing team, making recommendations for types of material that partners would find useful and the effectiveness of the assets we provide

Essential skills, abilities and knowledge

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communications are need for this role. Liaising with the key stakeholders about the campaign, discussing marketing materials, possible competition details and managing any feedback are all key to the ongoing engagement from partners. Some presenting to large industry groups may be required.
  • Outreach: We’re particularly keen to make sure we’re reaching new, younger and under-represented audiences who may not already be engaged with BIFA or their local (independent) cinema. Previous experience of working with young/underrepresented audiences, and of grassroots marketing would also be valuable. Otherwise, a knowledge of the landscape and ability to research these groups and individuals and reach out and build relationships with them with the campaign will be essential as this is a key measure of the success of the programme.
  • Organisation: Distributing assets to multiple stakeholders and ensuring timelines and assets are delivered in a clear and concise manner will require diligent organisation.
    Experience and knowledge of the UK film industry is needed for this role, in particular a good understanding of the UK exhibition landscape.
