Salary: £13.15 per hour for submission previewing + other work will be paid based on project fees

The BFI is looking for 10 Young Programmers aged between 16 to 25 to help us shape and promote the BFI Film Academy events programme 2024/25.

The role incorporates previewing film submissions for BFI Future Film Festival 2025, programming and hosting events online and in venue at the BFI Southbank in London, writing about film, and generally acting as the face of BFI Film Academy events!

Our Young Programmers will also engage in various activities, including reviewing submissions for the BFI Future Film Festival 2024, hosting live interviews with filmmakers on Instagram, curating and hosting events for BFI festivals, providing weekly film recommendations, reviewing films from BFI Southbank’s public programme, and assisting in marketing efforts by offering feedback on branding, social media strategies, and creating content for various platforms.

Freelance arrangement: June 2024 – May 2025

About you

We’re seeking individuals from a range of backgrounds and contexts, who are interested in developing their programming, hosting and writing skills (full requirements can be found in the role description):

  • We are looking to engage applicants between the age of 16 and 25. To have young programmers across this age bracket, this year we will be seeking people in three cohorts (those aged between 16-18, 19-22 and 23-25).
  • Be predominantly based in the UK between June 2024 and May 2025 and have the right to work in the UK
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills and have some experience writing copy for web and/or social media
  • Be passionate about the screen industries and curating programmes for young people
  • Have some experience in film festivals, film programming, writing about film, film marketing or similar
  • Be able to express their opinions in a clear, constructive way
  • Be confident speaking in public or hosting an online event
  • Be interested in marketing and feel particularly at home on social media
  • Have great ideas about the best way to marketing content to our young audiences
  • Be able to commit additional hours throughout the year for non-previewing opportunities such as event curating and planning, event hosting and short film reviewing, on an ad hoc basis
  • Be available to attend occasional meetings and training with the BFI Film Academy team during the working week (Monday – Friday, 10am-6pm).

Please note: This is a programming role. If you are a filmmaker looking to develop your filmmaking skills and are interested in a career as a filmmaker, BFI Film Academy offers a range of programmes and initiatives that may be more suited for your needs.

Time commitment

You’ll be required to attend in-person training at the BFI Southbank in London on Monday 24 June and Tuesday 25 June 2024.

Submissions previewing will also take place between Monday 24 June 2024 – Monday 19 August 2024 and Monday 19 August 2024 – Friday 11 October 2024.
Please note that as a Young Programmer you will have a busy schedule! You will be asked to take part in our other activities throughout the year as they come up on an ad hoc basis. We’ll be clear about the time commitment required when we approach you with each project, and we’ll do our best to work around your availability.
