The BFI is looking for an Assistant Curator to join a team of archivists, a conservator and collections specialists in the BFI’s Special Collections team.

The successful candidate will be working with one of the world’s most significant collections of photography and designs (posters, costume, production, animation), filmmakers’ paper archives, and special collections (scripts, pressbooks). The work of the Assistant Curator focuses on key areas of access and collections management while bringing core curatorial knowledge to the post holder’s work.

Role responsibilites
  • Take responsibility for acquisitions and disposals, cataloguing and preservation work and collections management for designated paper and born digital Special Collections (photography, design, screenwriting) in accordance with BFI policy and procedures and relevant international standards.   
  • Contribute to the delivery of the BFI’s cultural plan, under the direction of the Curator. Contribute specialist knowledge and interpretation to these projects as appropriate.   
  • Assist the Curator with exhibitions and loans work, as required, including undertaking administration, preparing works for transport and liaising with venues, fine art agents and external contractors. 
  • Working within agreed guidelines, undertake cataloguing in Axiell Collections of designated collections, including newly acquired materials and those that are part of BFI cultural programme, following the agreed documentation standards. 
Person specification
  • A demonstrable knowledge of, and interest in, 20th and 21st century British art, design and photography, particularly as it relates to the film and television industries. elates to the film and television industries. 
  • Good general knowledge of British film and TV history and familiarity with UK film and TV industries. 
  • Experience of collections work in a museum, gallery, archive or library setting 
  • Experience of/knowledge of digitising two-dimensional of works of art, with due regard for the original materials.
