The last Merchant-Ivory production following Ismail Merchant’s death in 2005, The White Countess is set in the bars of 1930s Shanghai on the brink of Japanese invasion.

Natasha Richardson (Asylum) is a beautiful Russian countess, reduced by circumstances to supporting her family as a bar girl and taxi dancer.

Ralph Fiennes (The Constant Gardener) is a blind former diplomat, devastated by the loss of his family. He opens an elegant nightclub “The White Countess” hoping to escape the political violence and tragedy that surrounds him.
