Verónica (Maria Onetto), a middle-aged woman, is driving down a deserted road in northwest Argentina. Distracted, she hits something but continues driving; afterwards, she is plagued with guilt and a growing certainty that something terrible has happened. Who or what did she hit? Was it an animal? A child?

Lucrecia Martel’s (The Swamp, The Holy Girl) enigmatic, rain-soaked third feature, produced by Pedro Almodóvar, was adored by critics on its 2008 release and has since only grown in stature. An undeniably brilliant film, it feels something like a haunted dream, every frame of which is constructed to generate tension and ambiguity and to make you think, and in which you as the viewer are positioned squarely in its female protagonist’s confused consciousness; the focus of which is a mystery.
