The feature debut of award-winning British-Nigerian playwright and filmmaker Adura Onashile (director of BAFTA Scotland-nominated short Expensive Shit), Girl tells a heartfelt story about a mother-daughter duo struggling to start a new life.

Grace (César award-winner Déborah Lukumuena) and Ama (Le’Shantey Bonsu) have a deep bond that’s always protected them from outsiders, but when they arrive in Glasgow, transplanted from West Africa, things begin to change. At first seeking safety in isolation, Ama’s burgeoning puberty and curiosity set off reminders of a past that 24-year-old Grace has been trying to forget. Soon, their sheltered world is eroding from the inside.

Arresting and keenly observed, with jewel-toned visuals, Girl explores the immigrant experience through a refreshing new lens. With finely shaded performances and an affecting mother-daughter chemistry, it’s a delicate and impressionistic story about trauma and coming-of-age.

This film will play with subtitles for the Deaf or hard of hearing (SDH) at Storyhouse and online.
