Shepitko’s last project before her untimely death in a car crash was completed by her husband, Elem Klimov. The aptly named Farewell concerns the Siberian peasant community who are displaced when their village is destroyed and relocated to a development of faceless apartment blocks. Many of the villagers resist, such as the elderly Darya who prefers to die rather than acquiesce although her son works as a foreman of the operation. A beautifully composed film about an all too familiar dilemma.
