The Silence Of Lorna

Dir: Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Luc Dardenne

2008

Lorna, a young Albanian woman living in Belgium, dreams of owning a snack bar with her boyfriend.

Desperate to fulfil her dreams, she enters into an accord with the mob, and agrees to a sham marriage with a Russian Mafioso which enables her to obtain Belgian citizenship. But for this marriage to be possible, her first marriage must come to an end. Lorna merely wants a divorce, but the man who arranged the scam has other ideas.

The Silence of Lorna is a riveting portrayal of a young woman battling her conscience en route to a hard-won new life. In true Dardenne brothers style, it’s a gritty human drama with skilled plot construction and excellent performances from Arta Dobroshi and Jérémie Renier that will keep you engrossed throughout.

Winner of the Award for Best Screenplay at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.
