Inspired by Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale The Little Mermaid, it follows Sosuke, a young boy who lives by the sea. One day, he rescues a fish trapped in a bottle. The fish, who is the daughter of a oceanic wizard, transforms herself into a young girl via her father’s magical powers (though despite his wishes) and promptly falls in love with Sosuke.
An enchanting and visually stunning blend of imagination, humour, action and fantasy, themed around friendship and the relationship between humans and the earth, Ponyo was the top film in Japan in 2008 and is the eighth highest grossing film in Japanese history.
