Kathy H (Mulligan) recounts her childhood growing up at Hailsham, an exclusive, seemingly progressive boarding school in the English countryside. When new teacher Miss Lucy (Sally Hawkins) reveals the true nature of their lives there, Kathy and her two best friends Ruth (Knightley) and Tommy (Garfield) must come to terms with the reality of who they are. As the three friends reach adulthood and leave Hailsham, a love triangle forms that threatens to pull them apart, and they must find a way back to reconciliation before it’s too late.
