The Ultimate Picture Palace (UPP) is a locally owned independent cinema just off East Oxford’s Cowley Road with a single screen, showing an eclectic mix of independent, mainstream, foreign language and classic films.
Oxford’s first and only independent cinema, UPP opened in 1911. The cinema was awarded Grade II listed building status in 1994 and in 2011, was sold to local resident Becky Hallsmith, who used revenue from increased ticket sales to make significant improvements including the addition of a digital projector, a new screen and sound system upgrade.
The cinema is now a thriving part of Cowley Road’s vibrant cultural community.
