Young Film Programmer's Industry Session: The Queer Gaze, LGBTQI+ Programming with Melanie Iredale

26/11/2020

4:30pm - 5:30pm

These Industry Sessions are part of a range of Young Film Programmers-focused activities, programmed by Film Hub South East, Depot and Reel Connections.

We’re delighted to welcome Melanie Iredale (Deputy Director, Sheffield Doc/Fest) for the second in our new series of YFP Industry Sessions. These sessions are designed to give our Young Film Programmers and others the opportunity to talk directly to people working in the film exhibition sector, addressing different aspects of programming with a range of experts from across the industry.

About the session

In this session, Melanie will talk about The Queer Gaze and how film programming can challenge and change mainstream content, making a difference to cinema and festival programmes across the year – not just during Pride Month. Melanie has been Sheffield Doc/Fest’s Deputy Director since 2014: having been involved first as Development Consultant in 2010, and serving as Interim Director of the 2019 edition. As part of her remit, she is on Doc/Fest’s programming team, and co-curates the Rhyme & Rhythm section. Originally from East Yorkshire, Melanie’s background is as a film curator and festival producer. As former Director of Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival on the English-Scottish border, she commissioned moving image works, installations and performances for heritage sites, which have since gone on to tour festivals and galleries world-wide. Melanie is a BIFA voter for the documentary award, is regularly invited to speak on diversity, inclusion and ethics in the industry, and has participated on juries including Nordisk Panorama, ZagrebDox and One World Media.

This session will be live-captioned, we’ll provide instructions on how to access the captions at the beginning of the event. If you have any questions about the event please get in touch at filmhubse@independentcinemaoffice.org.uk.
