Producer

SQIFF (Scottish Queer International Film Festival)

Glasgow

Salary: £16,000 (£150/day)

SQIFF is looking for an experienced Producer to work on the festival year-round.

This year’s festival is planned for 8-12 October 2024 taking place in person at CCA (Centre for Contemporary Arts) in Glasgow. We aim to start touring across Scotland every year after the festival’s completion. The Queer Filmmakers Group happens once a month at the CCA. And we have plans to develop further year-round projects for our audiences.

Contract: Freelance, 22.5 hours per week (3 days a week on average), from March to November 2024
Hours: Flexible with busy periods in the lead up and during the Festival happening from 8-12 October 2024

Purpose of role

The Producer will be a key role working closely with the Director, who is currently the only year-round team member. The role will contribute to SQIFF’s capacity building as it moves into its 2024 Festival, continues its year-round activities, and as it transitions into an organisation with charitable status.

The Producer will report to the Director, and will line manage the Access and Outreach Coordinator, PR and Marketing Coordinator, and Volunteer Coordinator. SQIFF is still growing as an organisation, and this is a new role. The Producer and Director will work together to shape this role collaboratively. We hope the Producer will support the Director in securing year-round funding to continue both roles year-round after the 2024 Festival, take part in the process of turning SQIFF into a charity, as well as creating new year-round projects for the organisation.

Tasks and responsibilities
  • Work with Director when planning projects to ensure that they are in line with the company’s strategic and artistic vision at every level;
  • Evaluate and monitor projects and be involved in the planning of future lives of projects, including dialogue with potential partners;
  • Liaise with our venues about events logistics including venue layout and use of different spaces, access measures, event ticketing, staffing, and safety measures;
  • Design and deliver audience evaluation (getting feedback from audiences on their experience of the festival) in accordance to funding agreements;
  • Be present to make sure events run smoothly and as a point of contact to support other team members;
  • Allocate and keep track of petty cash during events;
  • Co-write project reports for our funders in collaboration with the Director, making sure you have gathered all the necessary information for this;
  • Manage budgets in collaboration with the Director;
  • Recruit and manage the team of freelancers who will deliver different aspects of year round activities, making sure they are completing tasks to deadline and within budget in collaboration with the Director;
  • Organise team and one-to-one meetings as needed with other team members, taking into account and booking any access support needed;
  • Organise workshops and consultancy sessions for the team, taking into account and booking any access support needed;
  • When delivering a project, manage scheduling, travel, accommodation, per diems, material purchases and the marketing for workshops and public discussions in collaboration with other team members;
  • Collaborate with Director to develop audience development strategies;
  • Reporting to the Board of Trustees in collaboration with the Director;
  • Writing funding applications in collaboration with the Director.
Experience and skills

Essential

  • Previous experience of producing or producing part of a film or arts festival;
  • Experience of budget management of £50.000 upwards;
  • Outstanding organisational skills, able to manage their time and deadlines effectively.
  • Strong ability to manage multiple deadlines and tasks under pressure;
  • Excellent and reliable communication, with the empathetic interpersonal skills needed to lead, enthuse and collaborate with a wide range of teams;
  • Confident managing others members of the team;
  • Strong commitment to uphold high standards of safety and wellbeing procedures in interacting with team members, audiences, and LGBTQIA+ communities;
  • Overall strong and genuine commitment to Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and accessibility, including some knowledge and understanding of anti-racist approaches, disability justice, and trans inclusion;
  • Some knowledge of booking and implementing Deaf and Disabled access support;
  • Positive and recent experience of delivering multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Experience in writing funding applications and reports (Board of Trustees and funding).

Desirable

  • Experience of producing hybrid events;
  • Understanding and knowledge of barriers different communities experience in accessing arts events, especially barriers that LGBTQIA+ and Deaf and Disabled people and people in the asylum system face;
  • Experience and knowledge of audience evaluation (e.g. designing audience feedback surveys);
  • Experience with recruiting and managing volunteers or freelancers;

  • Experience with writing Access to Work applications;
  • Experience with successfully generating income for mid-scale touring projects before, and has a proven knowledge of touring on national and international scales;
  • Experience with financial management software, for example Sage Finances.
SQIFF priorities

The year-round activities should be open to everyone but priorities will be engaging and supporting Deaf and Disabled LGBTQIA+ people and LGBTQIA+ people in the asylum system to come along. This builds on SQIFF’s work in previous years of creating events accessible to these groups. The festival production needs to integrate Deaf and Disabled and other types of accessibility as much as possible.

Access support

We have a contingency access budget available for freelancers working for the festival. This means we can consider covering access costs people need to be able to do the roles. We are happy to discuss access requirements with people at any stage of the application process or before you apply.

Other types of support

SQIFF is a non-profit community organisation. The festival has previously been delivered by using one-off project funding and by freelancers. We are planning on turning SQIFF into a charity this year. This will hopefully allow us to have year round employees for the first time. Currently we have a Director working freelance three days a week. We are looking to add another team member on a freelance basis for now, who can work alongside the Director to deliver SQIFF’s work.

We will be hiring more freelancers for the delivery of the annual festival, so there is going to be a bigger team for several months. We rely on everyone on the team being mindful of others’ needs and workloads, so that people are supported to do their roles. We try to make sure our team’s wellbeing is always put first. The Director is currently supported by the festival Co-Founders and consultants, and will be a point of contact for anyone to discuss any issues with their role. When SQIFF becomes a charity, the Board of Trustees will be responsible for staff well-being.

We try to make sure our freelancers don’t work more hours than they are paid for. People are responsible themselves for keeping track of their own hours, and can raise any issues if they are having difficulty completing tasks within their paid hours.

SQIFF has an office on the 2nd Floor at CCA, Glasgow. We would prefer for the new Producer to work from here, however, we can discuss this if you would rather work from home.

Our existing team is made up of a variety of people all with lived experience of LGBTQIA+ issues. Some of us have other marginalised experiences and identities within that. We engage in ongoing work to address issues of exclusion within our organisation and at our events and welcome feedback and open discussions on this.

Please find more information about SQIFF and the work we do on our website (http://www.sqiff.org). If you want any more information about the role or SQIFF as an organisation before applying, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to have a chat with you.
