Marketing & Communications Manager (maternity cover)

Independent Cinema Office

London

Salary: £34,340 to £37,451 per annum

The Independent Cinema Office (ICO) is the national organisation for the support and development of the independent cinema exhibition sector in the UK.

We offer film programming services to cinemas, bring films into distribution and are the main provider of events, training and advice for the independent cinema sector. We work with the main funding bodies in film exhibition, are a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity.

Our film programming clients include cinemas as diverse as the Watershed in Bristol, the Broadway in Nottingham and Hebden Bridge Picture House. In 2020 we delivered a national film tour, Second Sight, exploring the legacy of the UK’s Black Film Workshop Movement. The ICO also delivers Screening Days, a national and regional showcase for cultural cinema for film societies, community cinemas and cinemas; and runs a portfolio of national and internationally renowned training programmes for exhibitors.

The role

Our Marketing and Communications Manager is going on maternity leave and we are looking for someone to cover for them during this one-year period (June 2021 to May 2022).

This is an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant, creative team working on a diverse range of projects that will include: helping to market our first online public-facing film screening platform, our Screening Days events and international training course for film festivals, overseeing the development of our industry blog, and working on the National Lottery Cinema Weekend. We work with many different kinds of partners across the UK – cinemas, festivals, film societies; local authorities and national bodies; distributors and education and training providers – and this role represents an excellent chance for someone seeking to develop their career in marketing and communications.

The ICO is a small arts organisation and the individual we are seeking must be a self-starter. You will be responsible for and enthusiastic about developing marketing and communications strategies for the ICO across all of our activities and in all media, whether print, broadcast, online or social. Needless to say, you must be a great communicator, planner and extremely organised. In addition, we need someone with copy-writing skills, marketing savvy, great ideas, an eye for partnership opportunities and who shares our passion for building audiences for cultural cinema. You don’t have to have worked in the cultural or arts sector before but must be able to demonstrate transferable skills.

You must be willing to work hard and be able to prioritise your own time, be calm and unflappable, work to deadlines and contribute to the team. You must be articulate and ready to undertake your own administration.

In return, we can offer responsibility, opportunities for training and development and the chance to work with a friendly, creative team at the forefront of independent cinema exhibition in the UK. We provide access to a Health Matters Assistance Programme (HMAP) – a confidential information and counselling service for employees and to Occupational Health services; a dedicated HR consultant for staff support; access to a SMARTPensions scheme; annual train ticket loans; flexible working practices; flexibility around childcare hours/needs; invites to events and festivals, and other benefits.

At the Independent Cinema Office, we are an equal opportunity employer, and we believe that a diverse workforce leads to an organisation that is more creative, innovative and gets better results. We want our workforce to represent the diversity of the people and communities in the UK and we want to see these reflected on our screens. We also want our workforce to be one where different experiences, expertise and perspectives are valued and where everyone is encouraged to grow and develop.

We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian, ethnically diverse, and disabled candidates, as they are underrepresented within the ICO.
