The BFI is looking for a Film Theatre Technician to join the BFI’s Conservation Team at the BFI National Archive in Berkhamsted.

The Film Theatre Technician will inspect, prepare and edit documentation in Axiell Collections and reference digitisation of identified film prints within agreed conservation standards and schedules, in support of collections care, curatorial strategy, collections access, and business projects.     They will also assist the Film Conservation Theatre Supervisor in the operation of projection equipment.

Role responsibilities
  • Carry out film handling, inspection, condition checking, preparation and repair, documentation, and reference scanning activities to specified quality standards of print and pre-print materials; check and document the results including direct entry of information to the Axiell Collections database.   
  • Prepare prints for projection at external and internal venues, condition-check of returned prints from projection, DCP quality assurance and support to new prints acquisition process.     
  • Use Axiell Collections and Axiell Move systems to update relationships between Item, Carrier, Container and Location records. Edit these records to ensure that collections items are appropriately barcoded and that their locations are tracked at all times.   
  • Operation of film digitisation equipment e.g. Cintel Scanners, Flashscan or similar. Providing digital media outputs as required. Document and annotate physical attributes of collection items.    
Person specifications
  • Film handling skills sufficient to safely run new and heritage film copies on analogue equipment.   
  • Knowledge of archival and film production practices and techniques.     
  • Appreciation of the relationship between Quality Checking processes and public presentation.    
  • Good working knowledge and edit capabilities of Axiell Collections and barcoding systems.
