Doc Society is seeking an Engagement Manager to to communicate their work and mission and elevate the work of our grantees, and the independent documentary community globally.

We are an innovative non-profit organisation founded in 2005 that works with the most inspiring independent documentary filmmakers all over the world. We are a team of around 25 people working from the UK, US, The Netherlands, Colombia & Australia.

Purpose of position

We seek a full-time team member to join this unbelievably committed and dynamic team to communicate Doc Society’s work and mission and elevate the work of our grantees, and the independent documentary community globally.

The position is wide-ranging and incorporates online communications via social media platforms, writing Doc Society’s monthly and widely distributed and read newsletter and organising an ongoing series of in person influencer events and screenings in the UK and beyond.

You will also employ strategic communications to ensure the value and breadth of our community’s work is effectively conveyed to our varied stakeholders globally.

This position provides ample space for bigger strategic thinking. Doc Society works as a team, with all members informed of all activities (no silos) and able to contribute to our ever-evolving understanding of the needs of independent filmmakers and the optimal role of the organisation.

Audience

Who do we speak to?

  • Our audience is filmmakers, independent film industry, a wide range of civil society partners (NGOS, philanthropists, policy makers) and funders with the hope of adding additional partners and funders. We are the delegate partner for the BFI’s national documentary funds so the UK is a key location, but we also work globally.
  • Our filmmaker grantees are from all over the world and we have deep programmatic partnerships with global cultural organisers on Good Pitch and Climate Story Labs. In 2021 this will include activity in Lebanon, India, Kenya, Brazil, Mexico, Europe and the US.
  • On individual projects we have other communications priorities. For the Impact Field Guide, we are growing users in Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic + Mandarin communities. While Doc Academy targets teachers in specific geographies in the UK, Kenya and the US etc.
Responsibilities
  • Organise inspiring in person or virtual screenings and dynamic conversations with filmmakers, influencers, funders and stakeholders.
  • Organise strategic brainstrusts for Doc Society filmmakers who are developing impact distribution campaigns with potential partners and funders
  • Manage Doc Society’s social media accounts and create online content highlighting our programmes, screenings, free resources and funding opportunities
  • Ensure our partners and collaborators are elevated by our communications across all platforms
  • Write newsletter in the Doc Society tone – informed but informal
  • Support our fundraising team, helping shape key messages for funders and stakeholders
  • Monitor, analyse and report on our media and digital impact for our tri-annual board meetings
Knowledge, Skills, Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge of Doc Society’s mission and work and enthusiasm for independent documentary film
  • Experience conceiving and organising next level convenings and events
  • Extensive knowledge of content platforms and the latest digital trends
  • Experience managing social media channels in arts, culture, cinema, museum or charity sectors
  • An effective communicator in both oral and written English; able to write in an informal but informed tone; an excellent copy writer and editor of own work and others
  • Highly proactive and organised, able to manage and prioritise a busy workload and stakeholders to deadline with consistent quality
  • Team player, establishes good working relationships and works confidently with a range of professionals
  • Meaningful experience in similar roles at a comparable sized organisation
  • You will have a desire to amplify the voices of the people we support and have demonstrable experience of having done this previously.
  • Social Impact – you should have experience working/volunteering in a third sector or social impact organisation and/or a proven passion about social impact
  • You will be well organized, creative, analytical, focused on results, demonstrate attention to detail and prioritise your work effectively.

Preferred

  • Creative – you have strong creative judgement and a good eye for design and you are competent in the use of Adobe Creative Suite, video-editing software, content management systems and graphic design skills for social media
  • Coding – a basic knowledge of HTML and CSS
  • Proficient in content management systems such as MailChimp.
  • Further Education is not required
Terms
  • Optional office working at 180 Strand
  • 28 days including bank holidays and extra days on top between Christmas and New Year when we close the office
  • Employer pension contribution after 3 months
Location

Position can be based from home or our London offices. If home based, will require occasional travel to those offices.
