Disability Equality Lead

Salary: £37,374 - £44,163 per annum

The BFI is seeking a Disability Equality Lead* to join their Inclusion Team, to support the Head of Inclusion in embedding the BFI’s diversity and inclusion activity, leading their commitments to equality for people who identify as D/deaf, disabled and/or neurodiverse.

*The BFI uses identity first language and when referring to ‘disabled people’, is inclusive of the d/Deaf community and neurodiverse people. This practice is rooted in the social model of disability based in the disability civil rights movement.

Key responsibilities
  • Devise, co-ordinate and engage with meaningful, sustainable solutions to prevent ableism and embed disability equality within the screen industries as part of the BFI’s overall strategy.
  • Lead alongside the Inclusion Co-ordinator & Events Producer, the BFI’s commitments to championing bold, change making disability related events.
  • Identify and amplify opportunities for better disability equality, across all departments and activities to encourage accurate, diverse representation from script to screen.
  • Lead and deliver the disability equality strand of the BFI’s Inclusion Team’s current work, including further development of the “Press Reset” campaign.
Experience and skills
  • Skilled and driven inclusion practitioner with personal experience of disability and ideally experience working effectively within, or for a disability led arts organisation.
  • Ability to and instigate meaningful dialogues with interest groups and colleagues in understanding the impact of systemic ableism within the screen and media industries.
  • Knowledge, awareness and depth of understanding of inclusion and systemic progression issues within the film industry for people from under represented backgrounds.
  • Experience of meaningful stakeholder management, with the ability to represent the BFI at external and internal events, with public speaking engagements.
