Cinema Projectionist (Digital)

Junction Goole

Goole

Salary: £9.95 p/h (under review)

Junction Goole are seeking a freelance Cinema Projectionist to help them deliver their film programme.

Background

Goole Town Council’s arts and civic centre, Junction, opened in November 2009. This superb facility for Goole is a mixed-use building that offers a wide range of arts and entertainment events and a cinema programme.

As well as our own professional programme of small-scale touring theatre, music, dance and children’s events. The venue is used by other individuals, groups and organisations for meetings, workshops and performances. It also provides the office base for Goole Town Council, a café bar and rooms for use by community and other groups.

COVID-19

As many venues in the arts and cultural industries, Covid-19 has had a significant impact on the Junction’s arts programme. The venue has remained closed to the general public since March 2020, though we have delivered a programme of events and workshops digitally.

The government ‘roadmap’ has confirmed venues like ours can reopen from 17 May 2021, and though we will have to operate under restrictions to ensure we remain ‘Covid-safe’ – we are keen to welcome audiences back to enjoy a creative programme of events.

Due to the restrictions in place, we expect to reopen with a public programme of film and exhibitions, with both indoor and outdoor live performance added to the mix later in Summer 2021.

The freelance Cinema Projectionist role will help us deliver a film programme with more screenings than we would normally offer (as we can’t run live performance, we are running extra film screenings).

Detail

We expect to screen at least 12 films per week. We only have one cinema space – so this means most days will include an afternoon and an evening screening. We do not plan to screen films on Sundays at present.

Our cinema usually seats 165 people, but with social distancing in place – this is reduced to 60 people per screening.

Applicants must have flexible availability including nights, weekends and occasional mornings.

Duties
  • Cinema projection for Junction Goole film programmes;
  • Film transport co-ordination (i.e. ingesting films onto server);
  • Planning Projections to include relevant content – including advertising, trailers, shorts and feature;
  • General booth upkeep and general maintenance of digital projector;
  • Setting up/dismantling of cinema screen, sound and seating as required;
  • Reporting on any technical or maintenance issues;
  • Monitoring quality of experience throughout screening to deliver best service to our audiences.
Attributes
  • Ideally we are looking for someone with advanced technical skills and experience as a projectionist in digital cinema, however, we are able to offer training if we cannot find those with the skills.
  • Ability to create DCPs from materials provided by distributors and/or programming partners.
  • Experience in Digital Projection for both film and live streaming (e.g. NT Live).
  • Ability to troubleshoot and fix problems under pressure.
  • High organisational and communication skills.
  • Calm, friendly and professional demeanour.
  • Professional and easy-going attitude in working with colleagues and others.
  • General proficiency with computers and technical cinema/theatre setup.
  • Act always in the best interest of Junction.
  • Act at all times in accordance with Junction’s policies and protocols.
  • Any other duties as reasonably required.
  • Keen interest in cinema and theatre – demonstrable experience working or volunteering in any role in the sector.
Hours and Renumeration

The role is offered on a freelance basis. This means you will be responsible for your own tax, and for invoicing Junction.

We expect to screen around 12 screenings per week, and it may be around one third to half of these will be covered by this role. However, this is a new model we are operating under and so would ask for flexibility as we settle in to the operating model.

Fee is negotiable.
