Bertha DocHouse is the UK’s first and only cinema dedicated to documentaries. Our programming is innovative, eclectic and alongside our screenings, we organise masterclasses, filmmaker Q&A’s, and panel discussions on topical subjects. Our website promotes the cinema as well as being an educational tool for documentary makers and interested people around the world through our resource hub.
Working alongside the Head of Programming, the Assistant Programmer’s role will be to ensure the booking and scheduling of the rolling programme, to research and view new films and to contribute to programming decisions.
We are looking for someone with a wide knowledge and appreciation of documentary and experience in dealing with UK distributors and international sales agents. The ideal candidate will be a good communicator, comfortable discussing the programme both internally and externally, representing the cinema to new contacts and negotiating screening terms with rights holders. They will thrive in a small team, be adept at juggling several projects at once and have direct experience of the day-to-day demands of cinema scheduling.
This is a fixed term contract covering maternity cover for 12 months from mid-October 2018.
Person specification
- Minimum 1 year programming or film booking experience with film festival, cinema or film distribution background.
- Knowledge and passion for documentary and a good network within the film industry
- Excellent communication skills and a confident negotiator
- Strong administration skills, attention to detail and ability to manage own time effectively
- Proficiency with content management systems
Responsibilities
- Working closely with the Head of Programming to produce the cinema schedule
- Liaising with distributors, sales agents and filmmakers from first contact through to confirming bookings
- Negotiating screening terms
- Researching new titles and screening opportunities for scheduling, making first contact where necessary
- Supporting the Head of Programming in planning the future programme
- Tracking titles on the UK release calendar and through international festivals
- Maintaining databases of films and feedback
- Viewing films and giving screening notes
- Contributing to short-term and long-term programming decisions
- Scheduling the weekly screening programme
- Managing regular cinema events on evenings and weekends
