British actress Sheila Hancock gets a plum role in Simon Hunter’s thoughtful, exploratory drama which premiered to acclaim at Edinburgh.

She is Edith ‘Edie’ Moore, a gruff, bitter woman in her eighties. After the death of her controlling husband George, Edie’s already strained relationship with her daughter Nancy begins to worsen, as she tries to convince Nancy that she can still live independently.

Meanwhile, Edie decides to fulfil a long-held dream of climbing a Scottish mountain and against Nancy’s wishes, heads to Scotland, employing Jonny (Kevin Guthrie) to get her the right equipment and train her for the gruelling climb. As the pair talk, bicker and have fun, they reveal more about their lives to each other against the sublime landscapes of the Scottish Highlands.

It’s a touching, tender portrait of late-life adventure and self-discovery, strengthened by uplifting cinematography and an authentic, career-best performance by Hancock.
