A arthouse classic that introduced a new vision of Indian cinema to the world.

Writer/director Ritwik Ghatak’s story of a post-partition Bengali family is a dark melodrama, full of expressionistic beauty and empathy for its female characters.

In a refugee camp on the outskirts Calcutta in the late 1950s, Nita (Supriya Choudhury) works diligently to support her parents and siblings, who have been forced to move from East Pakistan following Partition. Nita is willing to sacrifice everything for her family: her happiness, her education, her money and her health. Exploited by the society that surrounds her and taken for granted by her own family, Nita is forced to bear the consequences of political upheaval.

A visually sublime, provocative and deeply personal account of poverty and exile, The Cloud-Capped Star is a bitter critique of the harsh social and economic conditions arising from Partition.
