Meet the writers selected for our Outline 2025 programme!
Outline is our programme to develop writing talent in the South East, with a focus on those who are underrepresented in the film industry. This year we’re supporting women and non-binary writers or writer-directors. Participants will spend three months developing their short film ideas into a first draft, with editorial support provided by Rachel Pronger and the BFI NETWORK South East Team.

Ella Henke
Ella is a writer and arts marketer based in Ipswich. She holds a BA in Film and English Literature from the University of East Anglia where her love for screenwriting first jumped off the page. When she's not working in marketing for her local library service, Ella moonlights as a script reader and content contributor at Shore Scripts. She likes to write character-led stories grounded in the everyday, often centred around people on the fringe in some way. Her first short film about period poverty is currently in the (very) early stages of development.
Emily Cundick
Emily is an emerging actor & writer from Essex. Since graduating from acting training, Emily has worked with the RSC in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, appeared in the final series of ‘Doc Martin’, and in Simon Woods’ BAFTA-nominated short, ‘Such a Lovely Day’. She recently produced ‘Squeeze’ which won Best Short Film & Audience Choice Award at London Film Club, and is part of the programming at London Independent Film Festival and West London Film Festival later this year. Emily has a particular interest in writing comedy; her comedy-short script ‘Tipping Point’ was selected as a finalist for Slick Films First Time Filmmaker Fund this year. She is delighted to be a part of Outline’s 2025 Programme and intends to develop a coming-of-age comedy short, ‘Mum, I want to be a Priest’.
Emily Hine
Emily Hine is an emerging writer and filmmaker based in Kent. A Film & TV Production graduate from the University of York, Emily created several short films during her studies and served as Head of Scripted at York Student Television Society, developing and overseeing original scripted content for the station. Recently Emily was shortlisted as a finalist in the Women X Film Festival script competition 2025. She aims to bring emotional depth and fresh perspectives to every project, and enjoys stories that are character led exploring complex themes.
Kira Macaskill
Kira is an emerging writer currently working in TV production in London. After working in education for five years, she was awarded a place on the Amazon Prime Craft Academy, where she studied at the NFTS and undertook placements in various areas within production. She is currently working towards creating her first short film, which she hopes to shoot soon. During the Outline scheme, Kira hopes to develop her idea for a short comedy drama surrounding an all female theatre group.
Laura Hewison
Laura is a British/Australian writer and filmmaker based in Margate. She studied Filmmaking, Scriptwriting and Production at Edith Cowan University and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts way back in the mid 2000’s, before a stint in TV production. Laura relocated to the United Kingdom in 2013, where she decided she liked the vibes and the endless tea, and settled. After years behind the camera making commercial scripts come to life, she rekindled her love for writing creatively, probably something to do with the inspiring landscapes and sea air. Currently a full-time video editor, Laura is interested in telling dark and comedic tales, deeply rooted in the folk myths of her adopted home.
Lauren Midwinter
Lauren Midwinter is a director and writer known for exploring bold subject matter through a sensitive, curious, and gently provocative lens. Her work includes Glimpses — nominated for the British Arrows Frank Budgen Award for Best Director and screened at the BAFTA-qualifying Aesthetica Film Festival — and Tailing, shortlisted for a Kinsale Shark Award and acclaimed for its nuanced portrayal of public sexual harassment. A BAFTA Connect member, Lauren is now developing her first feature film, continuing her mission to make challenging themes accessible and spark meaningful conversation.
Lena Stahl
Lena Stahl is an actor and writer, originally from Paderborn in Germany, who has lived in the UK for over a decade. She trained as an actor at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London and studied improv comedy at the Free Association. She is a member of The House of Bollix!, an award-winning theatre company specializing in drag comedy. Their work has been staged at the Edinburgh Fringe, The Space and the Vault Festival, where they were awarded with the Spirit of the Festival Award in 2023. Her first feature film script, Evie, made it to the long-list stage and the top 1.8% of entries at the BBC writers’ room in 2025. In her writing she hopes to blend deeply authentic human experiences with comedy and the absurd and is especially interested in telling stories set in unlikely and overlooked places. She is currently developing a comedy short film titled ‘The Bird Watcher Watchers’, exploring our complex connection to the natural world, set in North Norfolk.
