Developing Audiences For Artists' Moving Image

Do you want to screen artists' films at your venue but aren't sure how to go about it? Do you want to develop an audience for artists' moving image? Do you want to know how to source artists' films?
The Independent Cinema Office presents an essential one-day training course aimed at cinemas who want to start or develop an artists' film programme; mixed arts venues who want to integrate their cinema and gallery more comprehensively; and galleries who are interested in forging links with cinemas.
This course will include presentations and case studies, as well as the opportunity for individual consultation on your own projects and plans. You will learn foolproof strategies first-hand from recognised experts who have years of experience in audience development, marketing and curating of artists' moving image. By the end of the day you will have identified achievable objectives for development at your own organisation.
The course will cover the following areas:
- Artists' film — what is it? The differences for distribution and exhibition
- Programming and sourcing artists' films: distributors and agencies, independent curators, rights clearance and potential funding opportunities
- Practicalities: funding and technical issues
- How do you develop audiences for artists' moving image? What networks can you utilise to best market your programme?
- Thinking differently and creatively about your audience and how to engage them.
Cost:
The price for this course is £30 + VAT (£35.25) per person, including lunch.

Course Tutors
The course will be taught by a range of speakers including; George Clark and Sarah Wood.
George Clark is the Artists' Moving Image Development Officer at the Independent Cinema Office where he has managed a wide range of touring programmes in collaboration with LUX, Frieze Projects and no.w.here. He previously curated and presented screenings at Cambridge Film Festival, Encounters Short Film Festival and Institute of Contemporary Arts among others and has written for publications including Art Monthly, Senses of Cinema and Vertigo. As well as curating and writing, George developed the Artists' Moving Image Network website for Film London (http://flamin.filmlondon.org.uk) and is currently finishing a new website, Curatorial Resource For Artists Moving Image, developed at LUX, that explores many aspects of showing artists' film and video though a series of resources, case studies and interviews.
Sarah Wood works as an artist filmmaker and film programmer. She was until recently the Artists' Moving Image Development Officer with the Independent Cinema Office and has curated for organisations including LUX, Photographerıs Gallery, Curzon Soho, British Council Berlin and the Cambridge Film Festival. She is currently setting up Blackman Wood — a free space for culturally diverse moving image artists. Her most recent films are I Want To Be A Secretary (2006), Surrender (2005), Manifesto for Love (2003) and Living Space (commissioned by DCA, Dundee, 2003). They are in distribution with CFMDC, Toronto.
