Youth Without Youth
Dir: Francis Ford Coppola | Romania / USA | 2007 | 125 mins
Coppola's return to filmmaking after nearly a decade is a playful adaptation of philosopher Mircea Eliade's novella recounting the tale of an aging lovelorn professor (played by Tim Roth) struck by lightning and somehow rejuvenated into the body of a young man. At the same time the professor undertakes a study of his lover who appears to be a reincarnation of a series of women stretching back to the dawn of mankind. The film is an eccentric, engrossing and ambitious exploration of language, ageing and evolution, ultimately playing as a metaphysical tragic love story. It's certainly the most ambitious, idiosyncratic and inventive work to come from Coppola since his 70s heyday most akin to a European arthouse influenced riff on the themes of his own Dracula picture.
