Premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and hailed as one of the most interesting, funny and intelligent teenage genre movies to come out of the US since the early films of John Waters, Teeth's premise vindicates the myth of the ‘vagina dentata' – a vagina with teeth. An innocent supporter of teenage celibacy has one and upon discovering her new set of gnashers, embarks on an empowering journey to take control of her sexuality. Jess Weixler's performance won her a Grand Jury acting prize at Sundance.
The film turns the usual portrayal of young women in horror films (sexually vulnerable, just waiting to meet some hideous death) on its head resulting in an insightful and refreshingly positive exploration of feminine sexuality with a bit of gore thrown in for good measure.
