Sing Your Song

Sing Your Song

Dir: Susanne Rostock|US|2011|105 mins

Singer, actor, activist – over the past seventy years Harry Belafonte has led one of the great American lives of the last century. Susanne Rostock’s biographical documentary Sing Your Song presents the struggles, tragedies, and, most of all, triumphs of this extraordinary icon. Belafonte grew up, poverty-ridden, in Harlem and Jamaica, and after fighting in the Second World War realised he wanted a life in the arts. Forging ahead to become a superstar singer and actor, it is his role as popular propagandist of the American civil rights movement that is his most inspiring. At the front lines of practically every progressive political battle in modern memory, he became close to some of the most talented and influential people of the latter half of the 20th Century

– captivatingly demonstrated in the 1963 CBS special, where you see Mr. Belafonte discussing the march on Washington with fellow marchers, Sidney Poitier, Marlon Brando, James Baldwin, Charlton Heston and the film director Joseph L. Mankiewicz. It was however his intimate relationship with civil rights hero, Dr Martin Luther King, that was to be the most significant of his long political life. Still politically active today, Susanne Rostock’s film follows the personal trajectory of this extraordinary artist.
