Thou Wast Mild and Lovely6

Two Films by Josephine Decker

‘The unholy marriage of Ingmar Bergman and David Lynch.’ Indiewire

'I’m not saying that there’s only one way to make great and important films, but that Josephine Decker’s way (like Wes Anderson’s, like Terence Malick’s) is ecstatic, essential, invigorating, inspiring, and inimitable.' The New Yorker

‘A filmmaker of considerable skill and imagination… she will soon be a known commodity.’ Sight & Sound

‘A heady, dreamy double bill.’ The AV Club

The Independent Cinema Office is proud to present a nationwide tour of two films by a powerful new voice in independent filmmaking, Josephine Decker. Sensual, experimental and hypnotic, recalling the natural wonder of Terence Malick, the uncanniness of Peter Weir’s Picnic at Hanging Rock and the unsettling dreamworld of David Lynch, these two features mark Decker out as one of the brightest hopes for American film. Butter on the Latch is the tale of an entangled female friendship, set in a real-life Balkan music camp in upstate New York, told with avant-garde flourishes and disturbing psycho-sexual undercurrents. Thou Wast Mild and Lovely, starring underground filmmaking godfather Joe Swanberg and Sophie Traub, is the story of a long hot summer at a remote ranch. Akin (Swanberg) is tempted by the daughter of the farmer, until his past begins to catch up with him, with irreparable consequences.
