The Film Theatre was established in 1974 to bring arthouse and non-mainstream cinema to Stoke-on-Trent. The cinema is completely independent and is operated entirely by volunteers.
Russell Heath is the programmer for the Film Theatre; in another life he is a design engineer in a field of engineering too dull to mention. He joined the Film Theatre in 1994 and ventured upon the role of programmer in 2007.
Russell believes that very few films wouldn't be improved by the inclusion of a motorcycle or a ukulele, but does not allow this to inform programme content. Instead the Film Theatre's programme is the product of an objective and expansive approach counter to Stoke-on-Trent's parochial nature.
