What do we do?

The ICO works in association with independent cinemas, film festivals, film societies and national agencies.

Our Mission

We exist to bring a wider range of films to a wider range of audiences.

Our primary aims are to:

• Promote diversity in exhibition content, audience and location.
• Develop a culturally-led approach to an economically sustainable independent exhibition sector.
• Provide access to industry leading best-practice exhibitor training.

Our key activities are:

• Film booking and programming
• Distribution of films that would not otherwise find a UK audience, including films aimed at young audiences
• Training for cinemas, film festivals and film society staff
• Consultancy at a subsidised rate for local authorities and not-for-profit organisations
• Developing audiences for world cinema and artists’ film
• Organising events and providing advice to cinemas, film festivals and film societies in the UK

The ICO is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity. It is governed by a board of trustees.

The ICO is funded by the BFI, Arts Council England, Creative Skillset and MEDIA.
